Personal Inspiration: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
What is your first memory of fashion or when did you start paying attention to fashion?
My mom used to sew our clothes growing up, so I cannot pin point an actual first memory. I loved laying under her fold in sewing table and looking up at the sewing machine. I think once I started to become interested in her fashion magazines (Vogue and W), I became a serious room collage artist around the 8th grade.
What do you do with your time that contributes to a happier/healthier society?
I try to say hello to almost everyone. Especially in my neighborhood, I enjoy belonging to a community. There are a lot of kids on my block, I do craft projects with them. It is wonderful, the plans are always loose, this Saturday on the stoop. They always show up. We talk about life and I share what I know and we craft. We just buried a time capsule at the beginning of the summer. They asked me last week when we should dig it up.
What are your daily rituals? Day and night face cream, nightly tea, walking meditation with my dogs, and evening entries in my gratitude journal.
What is your idea of happiness? Happiness to me is living fully and being led by my heart. No regrets, and enjoying what is right in front of me. Easier said than done, but when its achieved its a beautiful feeling.
How do you connect your art to the modern world?
This F/W 2015 collection Still in Motion is about know when to move forward and when to stay still and let world keep spinning. My campaign images used models who use their bodies for art/movement that was my way of adding life to the garments. So I suppose that is my effort to staying connected to the modern world of multi-media, multi-everything.
What is a significant event that aided in your personal growth? Moving to NY opened me up and pushed me in ways that I don’t think I could have ever imagined. The opportunities in the fashion industry are everywhere. I found a yoga studio this year that I love very much, the practice has aided in my growth and development beyond measure.
If you could be a yoga pose what would it be? Savasana, final pose, feel the difference in your body and mind from the beginning of practice, let it all go and you are ready to begin again.
What are you grateful for? I’m grateful for being able to see that even in the tough times, this life I have is so good. Beyond good!
What is something most people would be surprised to learn you are into?
I love sign language and can communicate conversationally (very slowly). My hope is to get certified to be an interpreter some day.
What inspires you to get out of bed in the morning?
The sheer possibilities and most of the time a nudge from a dog.
What is your weakness? Volunerability and forgiveness….and cheese.
What is your favorite type of cheese? It is a toss up between fresh parmesan and Manchego.
Are you where you saw yourself? What were the formative decisions you decided on to get to this point? Growing up I never wanted to live in NYC. So I suppose the vision of where I see myself is continually changing. There as aspects of my life that have fulfilled a version of my self imposed destiny and the greatest decision I have made was to be guided by my intuition. It was put there for a purpose.
Why fashion? What does it do for you? One of my favorite moments when I do markets with PlasticHeaven is when I get to show people how to wear my garments. I love explaining the origin of the design and the personal meaning and then seeing how people react when they see themselves is irreplaceable. Everyone wants to be understood and everyone wants to look good. It is a simple exchange.
What is your most memorable fashion design moment or piece?
The first piece I designed for PH, the stargazer. I developed the pattern for a personal and functional need, from there it created the foundation of my company. On a personal note….One halloween I dressed up as Gumby, I had a vintage DVF Kelly Green dress, green tights and I used a stuffed animal to make the Gumby head, made the face out of felt. Nailed it!
What advice would you give rising designers? Consistency, confidence, and inquisitiveness. Ask questions, keep moving forward, and know that if the idea is in your heart that is reason enough to pursue it. You never know what it will ultimately lead you to. Get to know yourself.
